Les fabricants d’appareils photo appliquent le terme « tropicalisation » à leurs produits les plus robustes qui bénéficient d’une protection « tout temps ». Toutefois, face à l’absence de standard en la matière, il est difficile de savoir si, sur le terrain, un boîtier estampillé « tropicalisé » se montrera plus résistant qu’un autre qui ne l’est pas. Essayons d’y voir plus clair…
Alors que la norme internationale Indice de Protection (IP) définie par l’International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), relative à l’étanchéité aux solides et aux liquides d’un objet manufacturé, est couramment employée en industrie, elle est pourtant peu utilisée en photographie. Ainsi, seuls quelques compacts baptisés « baroudeurs » affichent un IP sur leur fiche technique. Cette restriction s’explique par le fait qu’il est facile de qualifier la résistance aux intempéries (eau, poussière, sel, sable) et aux chocs d’un appareil dont l’objectif est fixé à demeure. Mais dans le cas d’un reflex ou d’un hybride à objectif interchangeable, la problématique est nettement plus complexe. Il est en effet nécessaire de prendre en compte l’ensemble « boîtier-optique » pour qu’un éventuel IP ait un sens. Or, quand on sait qu’un reflex ou qu’un hybride peut être associé à un grand nombre d’objectifs qui diffèrent entre eux par leur caractéristiques techniques (focale, ouverture de diaphragme), mais aussi par leur marque et par leur qualité de fabrication, que celle-ci soit réelle ou perçue, il est facile d’admettre que normaliser la « tropicalisation » d’un tel couple est quasiment impossible.
Face à cet imbroglio, les fabricants d’appareils photo définissent donc librement ce qu’ils englobent sous le mot « tropicalisation ». Cette approximation complique la tâche du photographe soucieux d’acheter un appareil photo utilisable quelles que soient les conditions météorologiques. Il y a en effet une énorme différence entre le fait de sortir brièvement son boîtier sous une pluie légère, le temps de réaliser quelques images, et celui de photographier pendant plusieurs heures sous un orage ou dans un milieu poussiéreux (prise de vue de chantier ou autre). Dans le premier cas, n’importe quel modèle de reflex ou d’hybride, même d’entrée de gamme, convient sans problème, alors que dans le second, seuls quelques boîtiers (et objectifs) haut de gamme peuvent opérer sans trop risquer une détérioration, le plus souvent liée à une oxydation qui se déclarera plusieurs semaines, voire plusieurs mois après les faits. Pour autant, même les appareils les mieux tropicalisés ne sont pas étanches : ils sont conçus pour résister aux agressions extérieures telles que les projections (eau, embruns, poussière, sable) et les petits chocs, mais il est fort probable qu’ils déclarent forfait s’ils sont soumis à une immersion ou à une chute de plusieurs mètres de haut sur un sol dur.
Qualité de fabrication et construction « tout temps »
La tropicalisation d’un boîtier ou d’un objectif photo repose sur deux moyens complémentaires : l’ajustement précis des divers capots et autres éléments qui recouvrent le châssis, dans le but d’obtenir un assemblage interdisant l’entrée de minuscules éléments indésirables à l’intérieur de l’appareil, et l’emploi de joints toriques (en forme de tore, autrement dit d’un tube courbé refermé sur lui-même). Or, il est difficile de savoir dans quelles proportions une marque fait appel à l’une de ces méthodes plutôt qu’à l’autre.
Toujours est-il que la construction des reflex les plus résistants (Canon EOS-1 D X Mark II, Nikon D5 et leurs aînés de gammes similaires), outre un châssis ultra résistant développé autour d’alliages de magnésium, fait appel à de nombreux joints toriques tout en bénéficiant d’un assemblage mécanique quasiment parfait. Globalement, le « niveau de tropicalisation » de ces modèles « pro » est donc supérieur à celui des reflex moins typés « reportage » (Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Nikon D850, Pentax K-1 Mark II), ainsi qu’à celui des hybrides haut de gamme (Canon EOS R, Fuji X-T3, Nikon Z6, Nikon Z7, Olympus OM-D E-M1 X, Panasonic Lumix S1H, Sony Alpha 7 III). Quant aux modèles d’entrée de gamme, qu’il s’agisse de reflex ou d’hybrides, ils ne sont pas tropicalisés, excepté chez Pentax, la marque ayant fait le choix de généraliser la tropicalisation à l’ensemble de sa gamme reflex, ce qui est bien entendu appréciable.
Parallèlement, les objectifs et accessoires (flash, poignée d’alimentation, émetteur) haut de gamme sont également tropicalisés, afin de constituer un ensemble cohérent et aussi résistant que possible avec le boîtier sur lequel ils sont montés. A quoi servirait donc la tropicalisation « ultime » d’un Nikon D5 si l’on monte sur le dit appareil un objectif à la construction « cheap », sans le moindre joint (y compris et surtout sur la monture arrière de l’optique) ?
Tropicalisation : efficace ou pas ?
Compte tenu du flou qui règne autour de la « tropicalisation », le cahier des charges étant différent d’une marque à une autre, et d’un appareil photo à un autre au sein d’une même marque, la prudence s’impose donc. En effet, ce n’est pas parce qu’un boîtier « baroudeur » est censé pouvoir opérer dans les conditions les plus extrêmes qu’il faut continuellement le tester et lui imposer les traitements les plus rudes. De plus, la tropicalisation, aussi poussée qu’elle puisse être, devient inutile si le photographe change d’objectif ou de carte mémoire sous une pluie battante. Moyennant ces quelques précautions évidentes, la tropicalisation, loin d’être un simple argument commercial, s’avère efficace (n’en déplaise à certains). Je l’ai encore constaté au Motocultor 2019 où, sous une très forte averse, j’ai rangé mon Nikon D850 et fait une fois de plus appel à mon vénérable Nikon D3 sur lequel j’avais monté un télézoom tropicalisé : aucun dégât à constater et l’ensemble a parfaitement fonctionné. A contrario, le lendemain, lors d’une discussion entre confrères, certains photographes équipés de boîtiers ou d’objectifs peu ou pas tropicalisés ont eu des soucis : appareil refusant de s’allumer ou fonctionnement erratique de l’autofocus, buée persistante entre deux lentilles, voire même infiltration d’eau entre les blocs optiques d’un objectif. Face à ce constat, il est évident que si j’avais utilisé un appareil de construction plus légère j’aurais sans doute eu quelques désagréments par la suite.
